Where can my dog travel on the bus in Spain?

Spain has no national yes: the traffic regulation bans animals on public buses unless the vehicle has a place for them, so every network starts from “in the hold, in a carrier” and only a few authorities have written something better. Two regional networks and one city network take a big dog. The metros and the Cercanías are where it actually moves. Here is which is which.

Regional networks

Spain’s regions don’t all run a branded network the way French régions do. These eight authorities have written one rule for their interurban buses; two of them take a big dog. Everywhere else it’s concession by concession — see below the table.

Catalonia, the Valencia region, Andalusia’s metropolitan consorcios, Aragón, Castilla y León, Navarra, Asturias, Cantabria and the interior publish no authority-level animal rule: each concession operator sets its own, and the default is the hold, in a carrier (Sagalés in Catalonia: up to 10 kg in a 60 × 35 × 35 cm carrier). Murcia is writing its first rule — public consultation open until 16 October 2026.

City bus networks

The city bus is the last connection — station to hotel — and it’s usually the strict one. One of these eight cities takes a big dog on the bus; the rest are carrier only, and the metro or the Cercanías does the work.

What this changes

The bus says no.
The metro often says yes.

  1. Plan Spanish cities on the metro and the Cercanías; treat the bus as a bonus.
  2. Bring the muzzle and a 50 cm lead — the metros and the two regional networks that say yes all require both.
  3. Check the rush-hour windows: Madrid, Barcelona, Bilbao and Tenerife shut the dog out at peak times.
  4. Recheck every rule a fortnight before you travel — Spanish authorities change these by decree and council vote.
