What the 40 kg rule really means

The old shorthand—‘Spain only allows dogs up to 10 kg in a carrier’—is now out of date for Renfe. But the replacement shorthand—‘all big dogs can take every Spanish train’—is also wrong.

Large-dog places are a specific add-on with limited capacity. The exact departure must expose the correct dog option, and some booking products or trains may not. Renfe also publishes age, breed-category, lead, muzzle and documentation conditions.

Booking a large dog

Search the exact journey, confirm that the up-to-40 kg option appears, and add it before buying the human ticket. Renfe advises advance purchase and limits the number of large dogs carried on a train.

A large dog does not simply become ordinary luggage. Follow the instructions for arrival, designated carriage or seating area, non-extendable lead and muzzle use during station movement and boarding.

  • Check every train in a connection, not only the longest leg.
  • Keep vaccination, identification and any required declarations accessible.
  • Recheck the booking shortly before travel because equipment or departure changes can affect the allocated pet place.

Cities and the last mile

Madrid and Barcelona metros admit dogs under detailed rules that include time restrictions, designated areas, short leads and muzzles. Urban buses can be more restrictive, so a station-to-accommodation journey needs mode-level checking.

Cercanías and Rodalies are often the most useful car-free extension because dogs travel free. They can open up coastal and suburban destinations without relying on a national coach.

Why coaches remain the trap

Spain’s coach network reaches many places the railway does not, but national coach policies commonly restrict ordinary pets to small animals in carriers and may place them in a dedicated hold. That is not a workable assumption for many dogs.

Plan rail-first, then verify the exact regional or municipal operator for any remaining road leg. Do not infer ALSA rules—or Renfe rules—across the entire Spanish bus network.

How the rule changes the route

Planning examples

Madrid → Barcelona

Start with an eligible Renfe departure and confirm the large-dog inventory before designing the rest of the day around it.

Madrid → north-coast destination

A long-distance train may accept the dog while the final regional coach does not. Compare a Cercanías or walkable-station alternative.

Barcelona city connection

Build around the metro’s dog hours and conditions rather than assuming the most obvious bus transfer will work.

Quick answers

Frequently asked questions

Can a 30 kg dog travel on Renfe?

Potentially yes on eligible services using Renfe’s up-to-40 kg product. The precise train must have availability and all published booking and dog conditions must be met.

Is the 40 kg rule valid on every train in Spain?

No. It applies to named Renfe service families and eligible departures, not automatically to every train or competing operator.

Do dogs travel free on Spanish commuter trains?

Renfe states that pets travel free on Cercanías services, subject to its travel conditions.

Can I rely on an intercity coach with a large dog?

Usually not without direct confirmation from the operating company. Many coach policies are designed only for small animals in carriers.
