The train is usually the easy part

On domestic TGV INOUI and INTERCITÉS services, a dog outside a carrier travels on a lead and muzzled at your feet. The pet ticket starts at €10 for each train taken. OUIGO currently lists a €10 pet fare regardless of weight.

Do not assume the same price or booking flow on every TER. France’s regional rail products can apply different ticket rules, even though large dogs are broadly accepted on trains.

The regional bus lottery

A destination can look rail-accessible while still depending on a regional coach for the last 20 kilometres. That coach may accept a muzzled dog, accept only a small animal in a carrier, or refuse pets entirely.

The practical rule is simple: identify the operating company for the exact final leg and check that company’s current conditions. A region-wide brand name is not always the operator.

  • Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, Grand Est and Pays de la Loire have published routes or networks that accept larger dogs under conditions.
  • Brittany, Occitanie, Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur and Bourgogne-Franche-Comté include networks where ordinary pets may be refused or restricted.
  • A rail-replacement coach is a bus rule problem even when it replaces a train shown on the ticket.

Paris and other city connections

Paris Métro and RER services admit larger dogs under leash, muzzle and ticket conditions, while ordinary city buses are much more restrictive. A cross-Paris rail itinerary therefore needs the correct urban mode—not just enough transfer time.

Outside Paris, check the local operator rather than projecting SNCF rules onto trams, metros or municipal buses.

Seasonal rail and ferry opportunities

Seasonal trains can turn a difficult coastal journey into an easy one. Auray–Quiberon is the classic example: the summer train removes dependence on a road connection whose dog rules are far less helpful.

Some Brittany island ferries accept larger dogs, making car-free island days possible. Ferry rules are company- and route-specific, so deck access, fares and muzzle requirements still need checking.

The intercity rail leg is straightforward; the decisive question is whether the exact bus to the chosen trailhead accepts the dog.

Cross-Paris connection

Prefer Métro/RER-compatible transfers and allow time for the dog, luggage, lifts and a relief stop rather than using the theoretical minimum.

Can I take a large dog across Paris?

Large dogs can use the Métro and RER under conditions, but ordinary buses are more restrictive. Build the transfer around the permitted mode.
