Can my dog travel on Sydtrafik buses in Southern Jutland?

Yes — if you meet every condition.
What this means for you: Southern Jutland is straightforward: every Sydtrafik bus takes dogs on a lead for a child fare, and the region’s trains follow the same national rule. Coming from Germany, this is the first Danish network you meet — and it’s kinder than anything across the border.

What Sydtrafik buses actually say.
- Who gets on
- Small dogs and other small pets ride free in a bag, cage or transport box they stay in for the whole trip. A bigger dog — one that isn’t in a bag — rides on a lead, under your control, for a child fare. One dog on a lead per customer. Staff decide whether there’s room.
- Who doesn’t
- Nothing beyond the national rule. Sydtrafik lists no exception.
- How much
- “Dogs that don’t fit in a handbag travel at child fare.” Small dogs, cats and other animals in a handbag or similar ride free, on the bus and the train.
- Where they ride
- On the floor, on a lead. Never on a seat.
- Never, whatever the size
- Nothing by breed. One dog on a lead per customer.
- Where this applies
- Southern Jutland (Esbjerg, Kolding, Vejle, Sønderborg, Tønder) — regional and local buses under this authority. The city networks and trains are below. Double-check who actually runs your service.
- Assistance dogs
- Guide and service dogs ride free everywhere, and count as an aid, not a dog. Make it visible — an ID vest, a tag, or papers you can show.

The national rule applies on every mode, so the question in Denmark isn’t whether, it’s when and where. 2 of the 2 networks below take a big dog on a lead; the exceptions are rush-hour windows and one city-bus ban.
Where a big dog rides — on a lead, at child fare
There are two networks where the idea is the same: lead, off the seats, and you clean up. Muzzles and fares vary, so read the row.
