Sweden train rules for dogs: what you need to know

The short version

On SJ, pets travel only in second class, in the marked pet section: select the pet option at the first booking step, keep the animal on the floor and bring no more than two pets per passenger. A larger dog or extra room costs an additional youth ticket (age 16). That does not create a nationwide rule. Snälltåget, night trains, regional operators, city networks and replacement buses each need their own check.

How to reserve an SJ train with a dog

A dog-friendly train can still sell out of pet places. Choose the animal option during booking and reserve the marked Djur tillåtet section rather than assuming any carriage will work.

Pets travel in second class only, in that marked section on the booked departure; ordinary seats elsewhere on the same train are not a substitute. Each passenger may bring at most two pets, and they stay on the floor rather than on a seat or your lap.

If your dog is large or you want more room, SJ’s rule is to buy an additional youth ticket: add a traveller as Youth, enter age 16 and mark Pet on that ticket as well, so that every ticket in the pet section carries the pet marking.

Night trains and long-distance travel in Sweden with a dog

Northern distances can make a night train the practical choice, but cabin types and pet places vary by operator and service. Confirm that the booked seat, couchette or compartment is specifically valid with a dog before planning the onward day.

Taking a dog on Swedish ferries and archipelago boats

Boats inside the regional networks are the friendly end: on SL services up to two leashed pets travel free, with signed ferry areas to avoid, and Västtrafik carries pets free on its boats using the starboard side. Engineering works may replace a dog-friendly train with a road vehicle whose animal policy is different. SJ says it will help you and your pet reach your destination on a replacement bus, but some replacement services have special rules, and on connecting legs run by another operator SJ cannot guarantee that pets are accepted. Rural buses also set their own rules, so check the final leg with its operator rather than assuming the regional ticket covers it.
